I read this article and listened to the news casts on the fact that republicans voted to approve the overtime rule for workers in the private sector. This change states that the employer can offer either overtime or paid time off to an employee. Sounds OK doesn’t it?
Let’s dig a bit further. Employers can say to the employee how about paid time off instead of overtime. Worker says perfect, I’ll do that. Not knowing that he/she is losing .5 times the pay in overtime. We also know that employers are very persuasive in how they talk to employees and there will be those that feel “pressured” to take the OT instead of the money.
Republicans think this is the best thing since sliced bread. Let’s take away .5 times the pay and make the employees think this is wonderful because they get paid time off.
Our government still thinks we are ignorant to the tricks. Minimum wage employees who get overtime want the money, need the money and some are currently in fear of losing their jobs so they might feel forced to take the paid time off instead of the money that they desperately need.
The bill passed 229 to 197 with no democrats voting for this bill. Republicans stated that this will give greater flexibility to Employers. The bill now faces the Senate and who knows what will happen there.
In my view this is a terrible plan and idea. The workers will be cheated with some knowing this and others will have no idea. One outrageous idea after another.
This is a needed Peace!
